While attending an academic conference held at Waseda University, the importance of good communication and presentation seemed to have been totally forgotten. I listened to speech after speech of people who are extremely knowledgeable in their field, but don’t know how to make a point let alone excite the audience.

bad powerpointIn his book, Presentation Zen, Garr Reynolds talks about “death by powerpoint.”I think educators take this to an extreme. Writing paragraphs of data and literally reading from a manuscript. The point it is, if you can’t interest of excite your audience, whatever product you are trying to sell or idea you are trying to spread just won’t matter. They will never hear you.

On my two and a half hour round trip on the Tokyo subway each day, I have a lot of time to listen to audio books and podcasts. After watching an amazing presentation by Garr Reynolds (Presentation Zen), I was turned on to TED. It now fills up a lot of my time on the train.

Today I watched an interesting presentation by Jenine Benyus titled Sustainable Design. It is all about how to use the materials and technology that organisms have developed over billions of years. Using this idea, we can create better products that don’t destroy the environment. See the video below.
