Along with our move from Tokyo to Miyakojima and change in jobs, we have also decided to try and simply our lives. One of the major ways that we are doing so is by getting rid of many of the items we have collected over the last few years. With just two weeks left before we leave for Miyakojima, we are beginning that process. Our goal is to take all the items we have in our apartment and bring it down so we an fit everything into just a few suitcases.
Getting rid of junk is one thing, but getting rid of things you once valued high enough to pay good money for and things that hold sentimental value can be difficult. What I didn’t realize for a long time is the weight and responsibility these items add to our lives. If you collect and keep a lot, you are responsible to take it all with you. If you minimize, then you can go wherever you want, whenever you want. A great feeling.
Other than a few items that we use all the time, we decided to get rid of almost everything. We are giving away most of it to family and friends. If there is something that you greatly value, then give it to a family member or a friend. Seeing them enjoy something you gave them makes getting rid of it much easier. Since most of our stuff is pretty new, we also sold a number of items such as couches, lamps, tables, etc. After doing this once before (when I moved to Japan) I know that I can always start over again and get it all back if I want to.
To get started you don’t need to start big. First, get rid of the things you don’t want. Then think of the people you are close to you and what you can give them that would make them happy. Follow that will a garage sale to get rid of stuff that you don’t need or use anymore. Instead of buying more stuff, put the money you make towards savings or paying down your debt.
Give it a try! I would love to hear your stories on how you have uncluttered your lives.
